Actors are people who temporarily pretend to be something they’re not. In Tupac’s case, it was en extended role - one much longer than normal. I would imagine that the longer it went on, the more natural his alter ego became, and the more convincing he became. The entire entertainment industry is sketchy as hell, because characters can be used to influence the masses. The puppet masters know that a good portion of humanity are lemmings.
