I'm pretty sure that there has to be more to it than that to catch a treason charge.
While it's obviously illegal, it doesn't necessarily harm or threaten to harm the US for Iran to receive classified material on Israel.
There have only been a few dozen treason charges in the entire history of our country.
If espionage was all it took to qualify to be charged with treason, then there would be many, many more cases.
Espionage is a different crime than treason.
Treason is almost never charged because it's defined in a very strict way.
That kid who leaked documents on discord in a very similar case was charged with six counts of willful retention and transmission of national defense information.
He's going to be sentenced next month.
At this point they're not saying whether or not this was a hack or a leak.
The word "treason" gets thrown around here so often that it's basically meaningless now.
