Growing up we used to wonder how such terrible things happened as the rise of Nazi Germany or the tyrannical USSR, where human freedom and human life counted for nothing.

We now see with our own eyes exactly how long-time neighbours and close family ratted out their own to the Nazis, the Stasi, and the KGB, knowing they would be lifted and sent off to die.

This thinking is very widespread throughout all mainstream society, including the levers of power. It appears these apparatchiks will continue to get away with it so long as the politburo protects them and maintains the illusion of total control.

I believe this ultimately will come down to a shift in public sentiment. These tyrants suffer a cognitive distortion that causes them to believe that they are the many, and people of good will are the very few.
