First time I ever heard anyone use that word was circa 1995 in Wooster, Ohio... same folks that say the "warsher"..."needs fixed"...

You'll never hear the word, legitimate around those parts...

It's either, "legit" or "full legit" - kinda like for real and for real, for real?

I think most people, including myself, use it as a shortened version of "legitimate."
