Wow, the trucks we have out here in LA the driver doesn’t even need to get out of the cab. This looks like a truck straight-out of the 1970s. Way more dangerous for the operator getting out at every stop just to hook up the can. Maybe their union fights for these types of trucks because of their inefficiency. Requiring more man power, longer work days in the process.
In the 70s, I remember my dad running down the street one morning in his pajamas with the metal can a la Oscar the Grouch chasing the truck when he forgot to put it out. There used to be several guys on one track- those guys were strong.
I caught an old episode of Eight is Enough not too long ago and two of the kids were taking out the garbage and I thought 'oh yeah' because that is when you just tossed everything into one can. Although I do remember my mom used to have a paper bag for what we now recycle and she would burn it in the fireplace. That is heresy now.
Keke! Here in rural Miss., we just got upgraded to the trucks! Old trucks has 2 riders that manually picked up the trash cans and dumped them. We be styling!!!!

Your truck got the mechanical arms. I understand.
The old truck uses man-power.
What will the candlestick makers do if you invent the lightbulb? Anthem
LOL
Our trucks have the trash can hugging arms, too!

This makes for a better photo op as he has to actually get out and do the tasks.
Smaller trash companies usually can only afford these. All the big companies have the larger trucks with the mechanical arms.
