Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. said Saturday that, if re-elected, Donald Trump would advise local governments to stop adding fluoride to public water systems, citing unproven health concerns about the substance. It is frequently added in small amounts to water to prevent tooth decay.
Fluoridated water reduces cavities by about 25%, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Local governments determine rules about adding fluoride and more than 60% of the country lives in places where it is added to the water, according to 2022 data from the CDC.
In his post on social media, Kennedy said that added fluoride is responsible for multiple health problems, but cited no studies or evidence to support his view. Conspiracy theorists have long cast doubt about the safety of fluoride though their views have been repeatedly debunked.
In 2006, a panel of the National Academy of Sciences found that very high levels of naturally occurring fluoride in water can pose health problems and should be reduced. However, the levels that the panel found to be problematic were significantly higher than the amounts added to the water.
Kennedy has been crisscrossing the country to stump for Trump since he ended his own presidential bid and backed the Republican nominee. He has frequently said that Trump would appoint him to play an influential role in food and drug policy, a passion of his. But others close to Trump have cast doubt on whether Kennedy would have a significant role.
Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for the Trump campaign, didn’t immediately respond to an email requesting comment.

RFK Jr. Declares End to Water Fluoridation On Day One If Trump Wins, Calls it ‘Industrial Waste’ in Post on X
Robert Kennedy Jr. claimed if former President Donald Trump wins the presidency then he would demand U.S. water systems remove fluoride from public water.
The former independent presidential candidate made his remarks via X, formerly Twitter, where he referred to water fluoridation as “industrial waste.” Kennedy noted that former First Lady Melania Trump also believes in removing fluoride from water.
Despite believing in numerous health-related conspiracy theories such as vaccines being linked to autism, Trump has vowed to give Kennedy a prominent role in America’s healthcare.
“On January 20, the Trump White House will advise all U.S. water systems to remove fluoride from public water,” Trump wrote on X. “Fluoride is an industrial waste associated with arthritis, bone fractures, bone cancer, IQ loss, neurodevelopmental disorders, and thyroid disease.”

The American Dental Association says water fluoridation is “safe, effective and healthy,” and that “70 years of research, thousands of studies and the experience of more than 210 million Americans tell us that water fluoridation is effective in preventing cavities and is safe for children and adults.”
Trump on Sunday said he plans to empower Kennedy, who has sought to cast doubt on the safety and efficacy of FDA-approved vaccines, to have some role in his next administration.
“I’m going to let him go wild on health,” Trump said at a rally in New York City. “I’m going to let him go wild on the food. I’m going to let him go wild on medicines.”
