I’m old enough to remember when big media started calling us “consumers,” and everything became about advertising and buying stuff you don’t need. And partying and having a good time. And not growing up. And planned obsolescence. Before that we were “customers,” or American Citizens. Notice they don’t ever mention the word citizen anymore, or civics, it brings up too many associations to responsibility and duty.
