When the hospital opened for business in 1877, it was renamed the Columbus Hospital for the Insane. It's said to have been the largest building in the United States, until that title was taken by the Pentagon in 1943. Designers created the building in a style advocated by renowned psychiatrist Thomas Story Kirkbride.
