I read about the origins of the AMA quite a few years ago. I'll have to revisit it, but if memory serves me right it basically leveraged the gross opportunism of snake oil salesmen as a reason to disregard all other forms of medicine outside that taught in Ivy League schools. Herbalists, midwives, and other traditional medical practitioners were painted with the same broad brush as the snake oil salesmen. One of the reasons dentistry sits outside of general medicine is that most dentists were put into the category of snake oil salesmen for a very long time... and in a high percentage of cases they weren't wrong.
I worked in the dental field for 13 years and yes there have been some shady practitioners and some shady materials / technology over the years. I’ve been out of dentistry for about 6 years. Solo practices will continue to be bought up by private equity. Your “healthcare” will continue to become more corporate. The founder of the AMA reminds me of Fauci because neither “physician” ever worked in a clinical capacity. My wife worked briefly in OTC and Rx manufacturing shortly after graduating college. She told me that if you could meet the people who produce your “medicine”, you would never take it.
