Obesity. When I was growing up in the 1970s, we ate white bread, Twinkies, spaghetti - things that are considered fattening now - as staples. Most people I knew finished dinner with a dessert. No one I knew belonged to a gym or jogged. The ambitious might have done a few minutes of Jack LaLanne calisthenics in the morning. And we were almost all naturally and easily slim to normal weight. The few people I knew who went to Weight Watchers were trying to lose 5-10 pounds, not 50-100.
I was in great shape until Clinton’s 2nd term. I was 215 and rating at the top of US Masters Swimming. Then my weight just got out of control even though I was still swimming and I cut back on some eating due to my age. My doctor said it was because I turned 40. Now I wonder.
