The Russians have supported Assad for years, he's a strategic partner of theirs. The rebels are Islamists. Russia will never support Islamists, not for a moment. They have had their fill of Islamist - remember Chechnya, Dagestan.

ISIS was eventually going to go north through the 'stans to attack Russia. They are a general purpose cabal goon squad.
