You need a lifetime of lessons that teach you critical thinking. You need to be burned often and at younger ages.
I don't think it necessarily takes a lifetime.
In fact, one of the best ways to teach this to future generations is an event that is coming up soon. The problem is: We do not recognize it for the opportunity it presents, and we harm our people because of our lack of recogniztion.
During Christmas, we tell "little lies" to children about Santa Claus. Adults have fun with the kids' wishful and naive thinking. Eventually, the kids figure it out.
But this is where we drop the ball. We stop right there, and move on, forgetting about it.
We should be teaching them that the Santa Claus story was an important lesson in life: We need to verify information that we get, and not just believe it because we want to. Then, we should help them identify how to figure out what is true and what is not.
Kids become adults, and they continue with their childish thinking because they did not really learn anything from the Santa experience.
Government, school, and media take the place of Santa, continuing with lies, while most never question any of it -- even to the point of being absolutely convinced in their false ideas.

Not an easy task, but it is a golden opportunity.
