Back in the 90's when I was working on SS7/C7 systems, this was so much worse. It took very little other than a point code and a Dialogic card to get going. I've been out of this field for a few decades, and I just assumed it had gotten a lot better. It's truly scary that it's still this vulnerable.
Truly amazing how atrocious it is. u/tweety51a sums it up though.. CONTROL.
It's a little bit better using the device just for encrypted services, but the IMEI and SIM give your location and personal details away.
