This is how it happened...I just finished the household chores for the night and was preparing to go to bed, when I heard a noise in the front of the house. I opened the door to the front room and to my surprise, Santa himself stepped out from behind the Christmas tree.
He placed his finger over his mouth so I would not cry out. "What are you doing?" I started to ask. The words choked up in my throat, and I saw he had tears in his eyes. His usual jolly manner was gone. Gone was the eager, boisterous soul we all know.
He then answered me with a simple statement - "Teach the children!"
I was puzzled; what did he mean? He anticipated my question, and with one quick movement brought forth a miniature toy bag from behind the tree. As I stood bewildered, Santa said, "Teach the children! Teach them the old meaning of Christmas. The meaning that now-a-days Christmas has forgotten."
Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a Fir Tree and placed it before the mantle. "Teach the children that the pure green color of the stately fir tree remains green all year round, depicting the everlasting hope of mankind, all the needles point heavenward, making it a symbol of man's thoughts turning toward heaven."
He again reached into his bag and pulled out a brilliant Star. "Teach the children that the star was the heavenly sign of promises long ago. God promised a Savior for the world, and the star was the sign of fulfillment of His promise."
He then reached into his bag and pulled out a Candle. "Teach the children that the candle symbolizes that Christ is the light of the world, and when we see this great light, we are reminded of He who displaces the darkness."
Once again, he reached into his bag and removed a Wreath and placed it on the tree, "Teach the children that the wreath symbolizes the real nature of love. Real love never ceases. Love is one continuous round of affection."
He then pulled from his bag an ornament of himself. "Teach the children that I, St. Nick, (Santa Claus) symbolize the generosity and good will we feel during the month of December.
He then brought out a Holly Leaf. Teach the children that the holly plant represents immortality. It represents the crown of thorns worn by our Savior. The red holly represents the blood shed by Him."
Next, he pulled from his bag a Gift and said, "Teach the children that God so loved the world that HE gave HIS only begotten SON. Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift."
"Teach the children that the wise men bowed before the Holy Babe and presented Him with gold, frankincense and myrrh. We should always give gifts in the same spirit of the wise men."
Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a Candy Cane and hung it on the tree. "Teach the children that the candy cane represents the shepherds' crook. The crook on the staff helps to bring back strayed sheep to the flock. The candy cane is the symbol that we are our brother's keeper."
He reached in again and pulled out an Angel. Teach the children that it was the angels that heralded in the glorious news of the Savior's birth. The angels sang "Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace and good will toward man."
Suddenly I heard a soft twinkling sound, and from his bag he pulled out a Bell. "Teach the children that as the lost sheep are found by the sound of the bell, it should bring mankind to the fold. The bell symbolizes guidance and return."
Santa looked back and was pleased. He looked back at me and I saw that the twinkle was back in his eyes. He said, "Remember, teach the children the true meaning of Christmas and do not put me in the center, for I am but a humble servant of the One that is, and I bow down to worship Him, our Lord, our God."
thank you for posting this wonderful reminder of ALL that Christmas means...

This video will open your eyes about symbolism even though it is speaking about the passage in Jeremiah 10. Yes...symbols are given their meaning by a group of people. We don't have to subscribe to their view of things because basically we can also ascribe our own symbolism to these objects. As a Christian I don't have to accept their purported "symbolism"...it means nothing to me. Think of the rainbow...God created it...not the gays. Hearts and love...God created it not the gods and goddesses. Christmas trees...the moon...the stars...God created it. The winter/summer solstice...God created it. Eggs and bunnies...created by none other than God and whatever someone ascribes to it doesn't take away from the fact that these belong to God. We are free in Christ not to be bound by the dictates of man or satan. Paul talks about this in Corinthians concerning meat sacrificed to idols. It is very freeing to realize the foolishness of people taking what belongs to God and rebranding it to suit their purported views.
I posted this partly for the non-Christians who utilize these symbols because I think that perhaps they will see Christ through them. I am not condoning the use of any of this symbolism, but I was impressed how the author's story all points to God's gift of Christ Jesus. This reminds me a bit of meat sacrificed to idols that Paul knowledgeably talks about in I Corinthians 8. Also...the rainbow...even popery symbolism can point to God and His authority over creation.
Heavy fire incoming.
I am wearing the armor of God...

This is a very interesting video that discusses the context of Jeremiah 10...I hope that you are able to understand the context of this passage. I think the meaning of the scripture is quite clear and while on the surface this scripture "appears" to speak about Christmas trees...that view doesn't hold up under scrutiny and study. It is obviously about idols. I am grateful for this knowledge from the Word of God.
You're telling us God was talking about Christmas trees in Jeremiah??? Context matters.
Yes...context matters...I posted a video you may find interesting .

So how do you learn if you never challenge your thought? Have you learned everything there is to know in life so you can never be challenged by critical thinking? The Bible is God speaking to us and I would think that if you want to fully listen to God you would "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." 2 Timothy 2:15.
If your interpretation of Jeremiah 10 is in error, would you want to know? I sure would. I am a Christian also and you have condemned most Christians with your interpretation of Jeremiah 10. I understand about a solo voice crying in the wilderness...it is good to stand up for truth, even if you are the only voice. I see some pridefulness that you feel you cannot even entertain the fact that many Godly, sober-minded Christians do NOT agree with your interpretation, which is NOT based on context and so you have judged them all because you are incapable of allowing yourself to be challenged. Paul did a lot of correcting of the baby Christians that needed the meat of the Word...growing beyond drinking only milk.
"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." Hebrews 4:12
We don't have to be afraid of challenge to our interpretation of the Word of God. That is why we have discernment provided by the Holy Spirit. God's truth is strong enough to withstand ANY challenge.
In all fairness much of what you said is true...which really speaks to the message in the story. Jesus was probably born in September and paganism is at the root of much of our accepted holiday celebrations...December 25 is based on the winter solstice. You do realize that any symbolism of anything is determined by certain people giving it the specific interpretation. So if you had listened to the video you would have discovered, as Paul did, that pagan symbolism is just their interpretation and holds no weight for the child of God. God has not interpreted it as such and as the creator of everything...rainbows, hearts, trees, music, love, gifts, etc. He does not condemn us. We are responsible for our sin and it's consequence of eternal death...not God. So is it wrong to celebrate the birth of Jesus on Dec. 25th because it is a pagan holiday??? Can we ONLY do it in September to be forever grateful for God becoming a man and making a way to reconcile with him? Anyway...have a good night...I have no need to argue with you. You cannot see because you have blinders on. I used to be very legalistic until I more fully understood God's grace, mercy and love. You are certainly free to believe whatever you want. I am certainly glad that you perfectly possess ALL knowledge and truth...at least there is someone in the world that knows it ALL. I truly thank you for your comments because it allowed me to study Jeremiah 10 to more fully to understand exactly what this passage is talking about. I love to learn and study God's Word and I am always grateful for deeper truth.
