Book by Neal Stephanson -The Diamond Age - had a early part detailing futuristic 'drone wars' that was something like clouds of insects going to war with each other. Or smaller. Its been a while since I read it but that one and his previous book Snow Crash had lots of interesting ideas. Later books fell off.
