Holy Father, when You expect us to be somewhere and do something, You don’t just give us an opportunity, You let us notice it. Whatever oddity we come upon can be a Sign. Either it means « Do » or « Don’t ». In both case we have to be fully conscious of the choice we make. Knowing it comes from You makes us focus on why because, even if You have Your mysterious Ways, You want us not to be unconscious robots when we achieve in Your name. Finding one’s Faith does not come to one as if it had to be performed like a culinary recipe. Faith is the outcome of a personal Awakening, we cannot and mustn’t force our Faith onto someone else, nor can we question his own Faith.

AGENDA

Today we celebrate Saint Spyridon.

Spyridon was born in Assia, in Cyprus. He worked as a shepherd and was known for his great piety. He married and had one daughter, Irene. Upon the death of his wife, Spyridon entered a monastery, and their daughter entered a convent. Spyridon eventually became Bishop of Trimythous, or Tremithous (today called Tremetousia), in the district of Larnaca. He took part in the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea (325), where he was instrumental in countering the theological arguments of Arius and his followers. He reportedly converted a pagan philosopher to Christianity by using a potsherd to illustrate how one single entity (a piece of pottery) could be composed of three unique entities (fire, water and clay); a metaphor for the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. As soon as Spyridon finished speaking, the shard is said to have miraculously burst into flame, water dripped on the ground, and only dust remained in his hand (other accounts of this event say that it was a brick he held in his hand). After the council, Spyridon returned to his diocese in Tremithous. He later fell into disfavor during the persecutions of the emperor Maximinus, but died peacefully in old age.

Today in 1503 passed Sten Sture the Elder.

Sten Sture the Elder (Swedish: Sten Sture den äldre; 1440 – 14 December 1503) was a Swedish statesman and regent of Sweden from 1470 to 1497 and again from 1501 to 1503. As the leader of the victorious Swedish separatist forces against the royal unionist forces during the Battle of Brunkeberg in 1471, he weakened the Kalmar Union considerably and became the effective ruler of Sweden as Lord Regent for most of his remaining life.
