IF Syria was the intended patsy (Assad "regime") then it makes A LOT OF SENSE that Assad did not stick around for the fight.
By "fleeing" he has deprived them of a plausible patsy. Now if they try to blame him for a dirty bomb it will fall flat. The story was probably going to be Assad-on-the-ropes gets desperate and blows up a dirty bomb, now that he has left they have a BIG problem - no patsy.
