A general appeal to prudence. Winter is the season when natural events have the greatest likelihood of interrupting service (e.g., mostly storms and downed trees). I already went through a half day of internet outage due to power interruption from a windstorm. Past episodes in December have resulted in as much as a week without power. Not to mention interruptions from hurricanes or floods. (I am now considering the wisdom of investing in a battery backup for a week of outage---or maybe a month.)
Internet connectivity and quality is so up for grabs in some parts of the world (like Zambia) that Starlink would be a Godsend, if you could afford it.
We had a generac installed. Finally! My mom just can't handle the stress of no power or evacuating for hurricanes any longer.
In our coastal North Carolina community, it wasn't the hurricane that took our our power it was the massive flooding in the area. Those that weren't flooded found out fast that even their Generacs didn't work. The gas company just turned off the gas to everyone. Not to mention that those that did have a Generac and got flooded lost them to the flood waters.
Now we know even Mountain areas can flood and they actually lose their homes. At least mine could be salvaged even if it cost a bit to replace everything and rebuild the first floor.
I have an outlet outside for a portable gas powered one, but doubt we will ever be able to use it. I live to close to a river that had a thousand year flood after we survived Hurricane Flo winds. The flood hit us three day later. Seems like those hundred year ones (don't affect me) are happening more often.
Yeah we had a 1000 year flood in Livingston Louisiana where I had lived for about 10 years. I'm familiar with flash floods and hurricanes
I lived in a 100 year flood zone and got hit bad twice in 10.
