Or the bomb went off when it was supposed to and the driver was shot elsewhere and the vehicle remotely driven there with a dead guy at the wheel? Spitballing here.
Black powder, which is the heart of all fireworks, is uniquely susceptible to detonation by fire, which makes it so dangerous (and why smoking is prohibited near it). Unlike other explosives, it has a very high speed of combustion at atmospheric pressure. Nitro compounds need to be physically contained (pressurized) and detonated by shock wave in order to attain the explosive velocity that leads to a forceful explosion.
The guy had a timer that he activated before he shot himself. Or the explosives package had a fuse that was lit. This is 19th-century technology.

I think this is a correct assessment. CIA
Has there been any word that a gun was found in the truck?
The clip in the link says, "one of the guns was found at his feet." No mention in the clip of how many guns there were.
I've heard in news reports, yes: they found a discharged pistol on the floor of the truck. And the coroner found a bullet in the driver's head.
I wonder if he shot himself in the back of the head, maybe even twice??
This is what I think. It was set off by a good old fashion fuse. After it was lit, he shot himself. Almost like a Manchurian candidate situation?

A 17 second fuse apparently...
Maybe?
