With the capital alone being at most 20,000. And only 12 other cities exceeding a population of 1,000.
Fragile Economy overly dependent on Fishing and Handouts from the Motherland.
Even if they get independence on paper. In reality they’ll be someone’s puppet in a matter of months. Too many valuable minerals there. Which will come into even more focus as the Tech and AI Arms races really gets going.
De facto, Russia already owns the Arctic Ocean. Its coastline is immense. (There are also a couple of Arctic islands first discovered and claimed by the U.S. that the Soviet Government invaded/captured. We've seriously never insisted on their return.)
Age old problem of Government. In particular Government reliant on elected Officials. How do you keep an elected official accountable and loyal? Especially when sums of money that are enough to live quite comfortably on if not luxuriously on until you die start being thrown around?
China doesn't make a whole lot of sense. It's natural access to the Arctic Ocean is through the Bering Strait, controlled by both Russia and the United States. In order to go through the Greenland Sea, it would already have to transit the Indian Ocean and either pass through the Suez Canal or around the Cape of Good Hope---which would be the result of not using the Arctic Ocean at all. Russia is the only Arctic competitor that makes sense. Canada is a weak ally, and Greenland/Denmark is weaker. The Norwegians are probably stronger than the Danes, but not by much.

Gives whoever owns it access to the arctic.
Indeed. And puts them in a ready position to block everyone else’s access.
And it would also be a key position to lock down in the Missile/Orbital Defense Grid Trump has stated he wants to build.
This was reseached in the cold war and underground bases and silo's built but was not completed because of the engineering difficulties.

Someone wants to be Chyna Whore ?

Now you are focusing in on the real problem.
