Both sides may be better off if Greenland becomes a U.S. Territory instead of a U.S. State.... like Puerto Rico or Guam.
If Greenland is a U.S. Territory, no citizen would pay U.S. Federal taxes. If they are smart, Greenland can make itself a sales-tax free zone, and become a shipping and trading center between the U.S. and Western Europe. Greenland citizens would be able to visit the U.S. at any time, trade with the U.S. and enjoy many benefits of being a U.S. territory.... without the problems that come with being a state.
From a U.S. standpoint, if Greenland became a state, we would be responsible for keeping up the main highways, roads, ports, etc. and for maintaining the school system, administration, courts and hospitals. If it is a U.S. Territory... no such obligation.
Besides that... I don't want to have 51 stars on the U.S. flag. I like even numbers.
