It was ours to begin with. President Carter sold it back to them for $1 without even attempting to take We the People's vote on it. What he did was (IMO) illegal and should be considered invalid.
Carter is an enigma. How do you go from screwing over the country 6 ways to Sunday, to building shelters for the poor and homeless and doing all you can to live a highly moral life?
From what I've heard from those even in the patriot community is that Carter wasn't a bad person. He was actually a really well meaning soul and didn't have any ties to any of the trafficking shit. Even actively fought against it iirc.
BUT he was not cut out for being the president and was absolutely unfit for the job. One of the cleares examples of the roads to hell being paved with good intentions.
However, I say take what I said with a grain of salt because it's coming off of memory from a couple different podcast episodes and interviews I heard years ago.
I was shocked to hear Carter was a real bastard behind closed doors, very difficult to work with and for. So I guess you never know, public persona can be deceiving.
All part of the enigma. You could tell he was a good person, even as president. But not tough minded and too much of a bleeding heart liberal.
Also, it seemed like he felt he could work with and reason with people, when in reality, he didn't understand them and what they were doing. Some people are just evil to the core. Understanding that helps to separate the wheat from the chaff. You also have to find people you can trust, and I'm not sure he did much of that.

I recall him not being good at delegating authority.
