Democracy was meant to be "rule by those who have an interest in the nation state". This meant that only citizens - Those who have performed military service, owned property, or contributed to the nation - could vote.
YOUR tax dollars are allocated by people who don't have an interest in your life as we speak.

Even someone who rents, indirectly pays property tax. It's built into the rent payment.
