The old Norse custom was to not get married until after the woman gave birth because fertility was an essential part of the marriage contract. Good intentions aside, there needed to be proven fertility before a commitment like that was made.
That might explain Norway, Sweden and Iceland.
No it’s a tradition of a cohesive Christian society.
Europe is still Christian, despite the best efforts of a tiny minority of chaos merchants.
