Neither excises nor tariffs go against earning a living, but the income tax (an excise) has been interpreted in such way that defacto it cramps earning a living for millions of people. As Ron Paul says, repeal the income tax and replace it with nothing. But replacing it with tariffs is an okay compromise due to optics.
