If you are familiar with German names, that would have been a first reflex. It turns out there are a multitude of equivalent spellings, extending into Dutch.

I hate auto-correct. At work I had a colleague last-named Gadler, who was a devout Catholic. I had written a memorandum with a distribution list and the machine rendered his name as "Godless."
