Well, they are recreating the mechanism occurring in D-T thermonuclear weapons, which works well enough. There is no way we can create the conditions necessary for the stellar fusion process, and no one is trying to do that.
I think you are alluding to the SAFIRE project, and they don't tout producing power. Just producing fusion. Which would be unremarkable, since this was long ago possible in '"fusor" experiments.

It was an accomplishment they did this in 18 months. And its smaller than others, I think development is just soo slow
