Question is: will this be used to escalate things, or deescalate?

I’m guessing this will initiate a new narrative to rally the nationals to (theatrically) force z-chumpsky to postpone peace talks.

I would not put it past ukraine / deep state to plan deaths of their own in order to keep the war going. Not saying that’s what happened here but it might be a possibility.
