The animation for KoKo the Clown was rotoscoped from film images of Cab Calloway, as I recall the story (i.e., traced over Calloway's movements, frame by frame). Despite the seeming simplicity of the characters, the animation by the Fleischer studios was very adroit. The background of the Mystery Cave wall is an example. The studios also produced the Popeye and Superman cartoons.
