Graham Hancock has said the same. Visited the location. The guardian is there to watch over it till they die. They all develop cataracts and go blind from the radiation the Ark emits.

Josh Gates visited the site and they were able to meet the guardian briefly. Sure as shit, the guy is practically blind with cataracts.
