I don't donate to any charity at all. We personally support a lot of people in my wive's country. 100% goes to the cause. They appeal to peoples wanting to feel good.
When I was in college I used to have to walk the cashier through my thought process because they just couldn't believe I wouldn't give money to them so I would ask, "are you personally going to take this money and give it to one of these children?" They would reply, "no." And I would say, "Well I would trust you with my money but I don't trust a shadow."
And telling them I would trust them with my money if they were going to do it was me being a little...diplomatic, ya know. And I think it drove the point home further which was, who am I giving my money to?
Americans throw money at everything and money isn't always the answer. Here in Nashville and working downtown at night I get approached by the homeless (Or have to shew them away from my post) I don't carry cash, but occasionally I have more lunch than I want to eat and share some with them. I also direct them to a shelter I know of or an abandoned building.
We support my son-in-law who married a widow with 4 boys and they have a 3 year old girl. We support a niece who lives in our house with a 6 year old and an almost 1 year old. Then there is assorted other family that have needs that crop up. I also have a good friend that I occasionally shoot a few bucks to, his SS is 60 bucks a month.
I worked at a non-profit after college. Every fucking spring was 'United Way' time! Every single year I had a donation committee member drop by my office, saying there was still time to sign up, and hit 100% participation!
I said I participate every time I get a radio call at 1am on Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Years/etc , and drive to the volunteer fire station for roll out.
I donate to several, but only the ones with personal ties in some way. A couple of them are well known, and while they aren't perfect (it's just a job to some people, but there is administrative work that needs to be done) most of the money goes where it's supposed to go and it's making a difference in people's lives.

Meanwhile Illegals get over a thousand dollars per month.

A lot of money going to find a way to stop cures for cancer.
and making sure the cure is never revealed...
And yet nothing is done about it.
Sounds like a calculus proof - the scam grows exponentially as dollars to kids goes to zero.
