To a certain degree yes, I agree with you. Though, even before it was popular he was strongly against DEI and boys on girls sports.

He got a lot of flack for that from his fans and from dems in general. I don't think it is as much he's playing the winning team as it is his moral center is not as extreme as the crazy alphabet people's is, and he's willing to go to bat on his beliefs. His morals are still far left, but he sticks to them.
