The founders and their colleagues also understood what it meant to serve in government: To go and serve for a few years and then return to your life as a private citizen. They never envisioned people serving 40+ years as a career politician who has never worked at anything else. Term limits are a good thing and we need them for Congress ASAP. They enforce what otherwise used to be understood.
