PreK teacher here. The numbers are much worse in my experience. Quite a few children have mild autistic differences and have not been tested. We also have kids who do not meet all the diagnostic criteria for autism, but are obviously exhibiting some autistic traits that interfere with learning and social skills acquisition.
I'm German and my trainer at the gym has also been giving learn-to-swim courses for children for decades. She says that in the old days there was about one autistic child in two years. Now, according to her observations, there is one child per six-month course.
