There is a different wide angle shot (more from the left-rear) of that coverage where it shows the operator is far away from the vehicle. If I find it, i will edit my post.

I think the coverage you are referring to just made the background appear closer (via zoom maybe?) to the foreground, so it looked as if the operator pointed his rifle at the vehicle.
