Gotta love Man's Best Friend. Back in my Thirties I took some college and in Freshman Composition I wrote a story about patrolling the Dog Track at Night.I worked there as my first security guard job, where else can you get paid to do homework? Anyways the Dog Track Owner was quite well off but cheap and very old so rarely at his office which was decorated with 70's shag carpet and furniture.
So my story was written in first person, and I hated English all my life due to my disabilities. I went to the writing lab numerous times and the teacher still found plenty of mistakes to red ink. She gave me an A- , but it deserved a C, Why? Because I very carefully hid the fact that I intensely dislike dog racing, until the very last line.
Dog tracks are in decline due to the state lottery, and I think that is a good thing.
I had a Greyhound I adopted and she was the sweetest dog. The trainer begged me to take her. Dogs race from about 18 months until around 4 years at which time they breed the champions and euthanasia 99% At the time I'd worked at the track there were probably a dozen in Florida, but there had been 22 there in the hay-day. There were Dog Tracks in other states as well, but Fla. was the capital of the industry. Flash forward to NOW and there are only two tracks left, both in West Virginia.
I worked other Jobs at the track before and during my security stint, but the security job was year round although the track was seasonal... I have other stories about the Greyhound I adopted, her name was Suzy, and her racing name was Black Eyed Susan, very rare for an official name to be the same as her pet name
Love it!
"Love it!"
...an anon gifted this to me over on X and I felt compelled to share it here...
...the puppy's expression is priceless...
