Study showed that the radiation from the fertilizer from the radioactive phosphorus - was linked to lung cancer in smoking - because while the wavelength of the type of radiation was short - so if it was on your skin it couldnt do much because the skin has some protective layers - when it was inhaled it went right to the sensitive lung tissue.
Companies knew it - studied the issue, could have added extra washing process - but that would have cost money and admit there was a problem - so they buried it.Got sued. ---------------
