I think Reagan had the best of intentions until he was shot by a man who was a friend of Neil Bush (George H.W. Bush's son). I think he fell into line after that. I also think a condition him being backed for President was taking on GHWB as Vice President. Just as Trump took on Pence in his first term. See below for sauce on John Hinckley (sorry for YT link).
