If no pope is chosen, the ballots are mixed with cartridges containing potassium perchlorate, anthracene (a component of coal tar) and sulfur to produce black smoke. But if there is a winner, the burning ballots are mixed with potassium chlorate, lactose and chloroform resin to produce the white smoke.
Holy smokes. They do some weird shit in that place....
It's to clarify the smoke color. Previous attempts using straw or burning the cards without the chemical resulted in grayish smoke that never clearly indicated a decision.

I regret that I have but one updoot to give for that comment. Well done, Fren.

Almost as if it was ancient Babylonian Mystery Religion masquerading as faith in Jesus...
So they burn the ballots? Whoever is in charge of counting those ballots has a lot of power...
There are three ballot counters or scrutineers.
If there is not a 3/4 majority winner, then the ballots are threaded and burned.
I thought it might be the Camerlengo, but it sounds more likely the scrutineers do it.
Is that where the phrase " Holy Smokes" comes from?
