What's lost in all this is that our tax rate is already radically "progressive".
It's not like everyone pays in $1k. Firstly, a whole shit-ton of people pay negative (i.e. they are on welfare). And that is not just poors, it is folks like Romney, Buffett, Gates, Soros, Pritzker etc. whose companies, estates, and orgs are lavished with welfare both directly and indirectly.
Then there are the folks that pay a little bit--mostly in the form of the "social security" and Medicare/Medicaid scams.
Finally there are the crabs that have almost made it out of the barrel who pay through the nose. Lottery winners, athletes, successful businessmen, doctors, skilled professionals, etc. On these people the entirety of the tax burden falls, because those are the people who could potentially make a change to fix the system.
