Advanced Alzheimer's requires enormous workarounds. My ex-ex came down with Alzheimer's, though the diagnosis wasn't obvious until after the fact. It was bad enough that she had to keep a whole kitchen counter full of open notebooks, files, and lists as a substitute for daily memory. This was some time after her mother had passed away, and the mother had gotten to the point where I could have introduced myself as Cary Grant and she would have believed it.
