Remember when the 5 pound bags of sugar or flour went on sale? My left hand hurt by the end of those days.
In those days, we knew how to load a bag properly, too.
I made $1.36 per hour, even though min. wage was 1.60. Some loophole related to hiring college students. And NO TIPS. We were forbidden to accept tips.
Us girls were issued uniforms, which were dresses. I don't think the guys had uniforms...
Most customers were nice. Except for one or two who had "shopped here for years" and felt they shouldn't have to show the ID for their check. (Two ways to pay: cash or check.) Worse was the manager who would explain to them that the checker was new, even the checker who had been with him for 2 years.
Those were the days.
The good side? Stores closed at 9PM and were closed on Sundays!
