Obamacare murdered “catastrophic health insurance” like a black baby at a Detroit Planned Parenthood. Made it “illegal”, then disappeared it so now no one even knows it existed. I was paying <$100/month ($25/wk) for catastrophic only (hospital stay, surgery, etc up to $3M? max I think) then paying cash out of HSA for everything else. (Circa 2003-2012)
This is a problem in multiple lines of coverage - the idea that we must have guaranteed platinum care for everyone. Guarantees cost money. Period.
Insurance tends to be the convenient whipping boy for lots of issues. I am not saying they don't share some of the blame, but one thing that doesn't get enough attention is how much private equity is in the healthcare space. PE's primary focus is EBITDA - not customers (patients).
