Either menopause, or he knows Trump has found something out about him that he can't dodge anymore and he is trying to get out ahead of it by providing a distraction. Either one is plausible.

However - he is up for reelection in 2026 so it is his time to act tough again, then start defending Trump on everything, and then beg Trump to endorse him - just like last time.

Come on South Carolina - do your job this time.
