The jolly old days of bigotry. Have you ever encountered clinically retarded people? These people are as crippled in mind as someone who is crippled in gait, or speech. Not any fault of them as volitional human beings; just what they were dealt with in life. It is normally considered a lack of compassion to revile or degrade such afflicted persons...only because you are NOT crippled and can dance rings around them.
They are not "stupid." They don't have enough mental horsepower to BE "stupid," since the stain of "stupid" is that one was smart enough to know better, but chose not to. The truly retarded have no capability to know better. They barely have the capability to know anything.
I would say that anyone who wants to derogate another person by calling them a "retard" must be doing it on the principle of "It takes one to know one."
