"Soon" in astronomical terms means in a few hundred years. It could have already happened and we could find out about it next week. Or it could take another 10,000 years.

Yep. Although people seem to think it is close, it's been acting weird. It's ~642 light years away so anything we see from there is from 642 years in the past. If you believe the nasa/uni story of course.
