The same concept was used by the French at their prison called "Devil's Island." There was a book and a movie made about life there, called "Papillon" starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman back in 1973.
OH yes it was, I'd forgotten that. That original move with McQueen was excellent, while the later remake of it, with Pierce Brosnan, was such a weak tea, sad exercise that it was hardly worth the celluloid it was printed on. The latter was almost a parody of the brilliant original.

Read the book amd saw the movie. Great read. Perhaps when the illegals are sent home we put the cruminal politicians there.
Good book. I can't believe how long ago I read that book.
Too bad Steve McQueen died so young. Loved his movies. He was quite popular.
"Bullitt" will forever by my go-to McQueen movie...along with "The Great Escape."
Thomas Crown Affair is a good one too.
