Not was, is. Take a fresh look at Revelation, it's perpetual. The lamb is on the altar before God the Father, blood and water flowing forever. And the presentation of the sacrifice at the last supper was explicitly commanded by Him to be done forever in remembrance of Him, which the apostles all knew to mean recreating the changing of bread and wine to His body and blood. This the apostles taught to their disciples, anointing the chosen among them; yes we need priests, as foretold in the old testament, that all nations would now their heads to the name of Jesus and that some of them would become, like Levites, those who lead the sacrifice (aka priests).
