There’s a shitload of abandoned Bases, Airfields and other shit they could use. Many of which still have facilities with mostly functional utilities albeit a bit dated.
Using an actively in use Military Facility seems a little silly given the numbers of out of use facilities. Granted Camp Atterbury is a National Guard facility. Even still.
But I’m guessing there were other factors at work. Like distance to Airports and stuff to consider

Camp Atterbury... That is where we went for Civil Air Patrol Encampment way back in the day.
Probably not a terrible spot to be if you were an Illegal. I imagine more preferable then the Everglades.
