Kinda seems - after 60-70 YEARS of keeping his "secret" mostly quiet and never winning a general election - he's:

seeking public recognition and validation for his choices

and

is attempting to use his (now "popular"/"acceptable") transgenderism (mental illness) as a "+" to win an election.
